What is a Dental Hygienist?
A registered dental hygienist is someone who specializes in cleaning teeth. They must complete a two or four year accredited program and pass an extensive examination administered by The State Board of Dental Examiners and their Dental Hygiene Advisory Committee. A hygienist must retain a current state license in order to practice. The state of Texas also requires 12 hours of continuing dental education every year as well as a current C.P.R certificate.

A hygienist not only cleans teeth, they are also qualified to instruct patients and parents on how to take care of your teeth and gums at home, and nutrition. Other qualifications are updating medical histories, taking x-rays, applying sealants, and performing preliminary examinations for the dentist. Most importantly, a dental hygienist is concerned about your child’s health, well-being, and quality of oral hygiene care they receive. Always feel free to share your thoughts and concerns about your child’s oral health with the dental hygienist.
